Question

Please show work.

Radio station KPHY uses two antennae to transmit its signal at an AM frequency of 1,520 kHz. While driving by on a semi-circular road around these antennae, you notice that there is only one location where the signal from both antennae is totally destructive. At this location OK), you are 94.0 meters from antenna i and you are 163.0 meters from antenna 2. antenna 1 a. Explain your reasoning in how you would know that the radio waves from antenna 1 are not completely in phase (ie. $2) with the radio waves from antenna 2. b. Find the difference in constant phase 4 (in radians) between antenna 1 and antenna 2.

Explanation / Answer

a)

wavelength = lambda = c/f = 3e8/1520e3 = 197.37 m

path difference = d = 163 - 94 = 69 m

For a destructive interfrence, path difference must be: lambda/2=197.37/2 = 98.685 m

but here path difference is 69 meters that is smaller than 98.685. Therefore there must be a phase difference between two waves.

b)

98.685 - 69 = 29.685 m

phas difference = (29.685/197.37) * (2*3.1416) = 0.945 radians
