Question

Physics lab questions for single slit separation of a diffraction grating using light of a known wavelength. I need all work to be shown please.

Data

D = 80.0 cm d = ?

y1r = 15.8 cm      y1L = 15.8 cm     y2r = 33.9 cm      y2L = 33.1 cm

?= 632.8 nm

Angle (?)

?RR          12.10

?RL          12.20

?TR          8.40

?TL          18.10

?VR          5.00

?VL          15

Calculate the average value of each of the three wavelengths (d = sin? = ?, use for each color the average of the left and right angles).

Explanation / Answer

First we need to find to find d using the information you provided...

The formula that applies is y/D = m(wavelength)/d

For your y1 left and right, we get...

15.8/80 = 1(632.8 X 10-9)/d

d = 3.204 X 10-6 m per line

Lets verify using your y2 data

The average of 33.9 and 33.1 = 33.5 cm

33.5/80 = 2(632.8 X 10-9)/d

d = 3.022 X 10-6 m

Thus we are really close, so we can use the average of those two values which will be 3.113 X 10-6 m for d in the next calculations

For angles, the formula is sin(angle) = (wavelength)/d

The average of 12.10 and 12.20 is 12.15 for RR and RL

sin(12.15) = (wavelength)/3.113 X 10-6

wavelength = 655.2 nm for RR and RL

For TR and TL, those angles are pretty different, probably some labe error there, but lets take the average anyway

(8.4 + 18.1)/2 = 13.25

sin(13.25) = (wavelength)/3.113 X 10-6

wavelength = 713.5 nm for TR and TL

For VR and VL, those angles are also pretty different, probably some labe error there as well, but the aevrage is

(5 + 15)/2 = 10

sin(10) = (wavelength)/3.113 X 10-6

wavelength = 540.6 nm for VR and VL
