Question

In a circuit, a 2.00 uF capacitor is placed in series with a 6.00 uF capacitor, and this combination is then placed in parallel with a series combination of a 4.50 uF capacitor and a 9.00 uF capacitor. What is the equivalent capacitance in microfarads of these four capacitors? Give your answer to 3 significant figures.
Answer _________ uF In a circuit, a 2.00 uF capacitor is placed in series with a 6.00 uF capacitor, and this combination is then placed in parallel with a series combination of a 4.50 uF capacitor and a 9.00 uF capacitor. What is the equivalent capacitance in microfarads of these four capacitors? Give your answer to 3 significant figures.
Answer _________ uF
Answer _________ uF

Explanation / Answer

2 uF and 6 uF are in series

so the capacitance is

Cs1 = 1 / c1 + 1 / c2

Cs1 = 1/ 2 + 1 / 6

Cs1 = 1.5 uF

then 4.50 uF and 9 uF are in series

Cs2 = 1 / 4.5 + 1 / 9

Cs2 = 3 uF

so in the circuit Cs1 and Cs2 are in parallel

therefore ,

total capacitance C = Cs1 + Cs2

C = 1.5 + 3

C = 4.5 uF

so the total capacitance of the circuit is 4.5 uF
