Question

Two blocks M1 and M2 are connected by a massless string that passes over a massless pulley as shown in the figure. M2, which has a mass of 11.5 kg, rests on a long ramp of angle ? = 27.5?. Friction can be ignored in this problem. Find the value of the mass M1 for which the two blocks are in equilibrium (i.e. not accelerating).

Two blocks M1 and M2 are connected by a massless string that passes over a massless pulley as shown in the figure. M2, which has a mass of 11.5 kg, rests on a long ramp of angle theta = 27.5. Friction can be ignored in this problem. Find the value of the mass M1 for which the two blocks are in equilibrium (i.e. not accelerating).

Explanation / Answer

let T be the tension in the string

then for M1 block the tension in the string is

T = M1 * g

and then for the block M2

T = M2 * g *sin (theta)

by equate the both equations

M1 * g = M2 * g * sin(theta)

M1 = 11.5 * sin(27.5)

M1 = 5.30 kg
