Question

Two blocks M1 and M2 are connected by a massless string that passes over a massless pulley (figure below). M2, which has a mass of 12 kg, rests on a long ramp of angle equal to 40°. Friction can be ignored in this problem.

(a) Find the value of M1 for which the two blocks are in equilibrium (no acceleration).
  kg

(b) If the actual mass of M1 is 7 kg and the system is allowed to move, find the acceleration of the two blocks.
m/s2

(c) In part (b) does M2 move up or down the ramp?

updown

(d) In part (b), how far does block M2 move in 2 s?
m

M2

Explanation / Answer

M2 = 12 kg

angle = theta = 40 degrees

a) if blocks are in equilibrium net force is zero

M1 = M2*sintheta

M1 = 12*sin40

M1 = 7.71 kg

b)

a = g*(M2*sin40-M1)/(M1+M2)

a = 9.8*(12*sin40-7)/(12+7) = 0.37 m/sec^2

c)   down

d) V0 = 0

s = (1/2)*a*t^2 = 1/2 * 0.37*4 =0.74 m
