Question

Here is the question along with the answer broken down below. Could you please explain how a) is obtained and explicitly show the math? I am having trouble doing the math with the trigonometric pieces. Thank you!

The red team's curling stone has an initial speed of v, when it strikes the yellow team's stone that is initially at rest. The red stone deviates by 60o from its original direction, and the yellow stone moves off at 30% from the original direction, as shown in the figure. a) In terms of v1 what are the speeds of the two stones after the collision? b) Using your answer to part a), explicitly calculate the center-of- mass velocity of the two-stone system following the collision. 60 30 2f

Explanation / Answer

Initially the red team stone moves in horizental direction so it have horizental component ( along x component) and yellow team stone intially at rest posiiton. So it horizental and vertical components are zero.

After collision red team stone makes 600 with x axis. So it resolved into two components. They are v1f cos(600) along X-direction, and v1f sin(600) along Y-direction.

After collision red team stone makes - 300 with x axis. So it resolved into two components.They are v2f cos(-300) = v2f cos(300) along X-direction, and v2f sin(-300)= - v2f sin(300) along Y-direction.

Now we take conservation of momentum laws along in X-direction and along in Y-direction.

After substituting X and Y compoentns of velocity of two stones before after collision, we can get the answers.
