Question

Part A

Using the diagram to the left, rank each of the given paths on the basis of the change in electric potential. Rank the largest-magnitude positive change (increase in electric potential) as largest and the largest-magnitude negative change (decrease in electric potential) as smallest.

Rank from largest to smallest. To rank items as equivalent, use = sign.

A. from b to a

B. from c to d

C. from d to a

D. from c to b

E. from f to e

F. from c to e

**** This answer is NOT D > E> C = B > F > A *****

Explanation / Answer

Firstly we will sort the points according to there potentials

b(1)>a(2)>c(3)=d(3)>f(4)>e(5)

A. from b to a : -ve negative

B. from c to d : 0 Zero

C. from d to a : +ve POsitive

D. from c to b : ++ve POsitive

E. from f to e : -ve Negative

F. from c to e : --ve Negative

Now comapare positives and negatives separately

D, C are positive potentials In which points c,d hacve equal potentials so and 'b' has more potential than 'a' so Path D > path C

Now comparing the negatives A,E,F

Distance between 'b' to 'a' and 'e' to 'f' are equal so change in potential is also equal, where as it is greater in case of path 'c' to 'e'. so change in potenttial is given as A = E > F

The correct order is D > C > B > A = E > F
