Question

Part A

Use the following balanced chemical equation to find the mass of carbon dioxide, CO2 that produces through electrolysis each year by the production of 1.6×107 metric tons of aluminum, Al. Interestingly, the total mass of our atmosphere is only about 5×1015 metric tons.
4Al2O3+3C4Al+3CO2

Express your answer using two significant figures

PART B

Find the pH of a solution when its hydronium-ion concentration equals 2 moles/L.

Part C

Is the solution acidic or basic?

Part D

Find a hydroxide-ion concentration in an aqueous solution having a pH of 6.

Express your answer using one significant figures.

Explanation / Answer

A)
m of Al = 1.6*10^7 tonn = 1.6*10^13 g
molar mass of Al= 27g/mol
number of moles of Al = mass/molar mass
= 1.6*10^13/27
= 5.93*10^11 mol

when 4 moles of Al is produced, moles of CO2 produced = 3 mol

So,
total moles of CO2 produced = 3*5.93*10^11 / 4= 4.44*10^11 mol

molar mass of CO2 = 44 g/mol
mass of CO2 = number of moles * molar mass
= 4.44*10^11 * 44
= 1.96*10^13 g
= 2.0*10^7 metric tonn

B)
[H+]= 2 M
pH = -log [H+]
= -log (2)
=0.3

C)
since pH is less than 7, solution is acidic

D)
pH = 6
pOH = 14 - pH = 14 - 6 = 8

pOH = -log [OH-]
8 = -log [OH-]
[OH-] = 1*10^-8 M
Answer: 1*10^-8 M
