Start with the file "Iab reportable diseases "and the alphabetical list under subsections e1 and e2 in the California Code of Regulations, Title 17, Section 2505, choose one disease to describe for the below section Name of the etiologicícausative) agent cauing the epidemic Type of Pathogen: Brief description of this agent (cellular? Basic features?) Portal of Entry: Mode of Transmission Symptoms: Is there a vaccine available? Treatment: Means of Epidemiologic Control: Other interesting facts about this pathogen?

Explanation / Answer

Ebola virus disease

1)causative agent- Ebola virus

2)Brief description about pathogen- The pathogen Ebola virus is a virological taxon from family filoviridae. The members of this geans are called Ebola viruses. Each species of the genus Ebola virus has one member virus and four of this cause Ebola virus disease in humans.

3)Portal of entry- It infects humans through contact with mucous membranes or skin breaks.

4)Mode of transmission -After entry of virus inside human body it attracts endothelial cells ,liver cells and several types of immune cells are the main targets of attack. Following infection immune cells carry the virus to nearby lymphnodes where further reproduction of virus take place. From there the virus can enter the blood stream and lymphatic system and spread throughout the body.

5)Symptoms -Main symptoms of disease is fever, sore throat, muscular pain, headache ,diarrhoea and bleeding. There is a internal and external bleeding due to decreased blood clotting can occur. This may cause vomiting of blood, coughing of blood, blood in stool . Bleeding in to skin may create petechiae, purpura, ecchymosis or haematoma.

6)There is no vaccine available for this disease.

7) Treatment -No specific treatment is currently available .But supportive care with rehydration and symptomatic treatment should be done.

8)Epidemiological control done by isolation of patients and contact tracing. People who infected by Ebola virus should wear protective clothing like masks, gloves, gowns, goggles . Contact tracing is considered important to control outbreaks. It involves finding every one who had close contact with infected individual and watching them for signs of illness .

9) Interesting facts about pathogen -Ebola virus were first described after outbreak of Ebola virus disease in southern Sudan. The name of Ebola virus is derived from Ebola river in Zaire.
