The discharge curve for a capacitor connected in series with a resistor is shown on the right, (a) Is the maximum current in the resistor at the beginning or at the end of the discharge? Explain your answer, (b) If the capacitance of the capacitor is 0.050 F, what is the resistance of the resistor? (c) After the capacitor is fully discharged, it is again charged. How much time after charging begins is required for the potential difference across the capacitor to reach 10.0 volts.Explanation / Answer
a) For capacitor,
i(current) = C dv/dt
Since at begining, for small time duration, voltage variation is more ,so dv/dt will be more which creates maximun current as C(capacitance ) is constant.
b) Time for discharging of a capacitor = Resistance X Capacitor
30 = R X 0.05
R = 30/0.05
=600 ohms
c) Vc = Vo(1- exp-t/Tc)
where Vc is the charging voltage
Vo is the initial voltage
t is the required time to charge upto Vc
Tc = Rc x C
Vc= 10 volts
