Question
Please explain clearly and with steps if necessary!
Suppose a parallel plate capacitor (with capacitance Co) is fully charged (to a value Qo) by a battery. The battery (which supplies a potential differnce of Vo) STAYS CONNECTED to form the capacitor. If the plates of the capacitor are then moved closer together (the separation distance d bettween the plates is halved), describe QUANTITATIVELY what happens to :
a). the capacitance of the capacitor
b). the potential differene between the planes
c). the energy stored in the capacitor
d). the charge on the plates
Explanation / Answer
a) Capacitance will be double, because capacitance is inversaly proportional to the seperation of plates.
b) Potential Difference will become half, V = q/C
c) Energy will become double, E = 1/2 * CV^2
d) Charge will remain same
