Question
Can you help me with this I am in Biology 1 and dont know where to start with this question, an answer will be greatly appreciated! The question is one answer it just tells you what you should discuss in your answer! You are on a biodiversity mission in South America and discover a new species of rodent. You notice that these rodents have abnormal growths of skin throughout their bodies. Using stateof-the-art techniques, you discover that these rodents have a defective gene, which interferes with chemical signaling during the cell cycle. Upon further analysis, you determine that the defective gene prevents formation of receptors that receive a “stop” signal, inhibiting mitotic replication. Explain how this defect in the cell cycle could cause these abnormal skin growths. Address the following topics in your answer: Discuss the cell cycle, the process of mitosis, the function of mitosis in somatic cells, and how a defect in the cell cycle can be detrimental.
Explanation / Answer
The abnormal skin growths are clearly masses of excess cells in the rodents' bodies. In the mitotic process, a single cell divides into two identical daughter cells. Without the receptor that receives the chemical signal that indicates the stop for cell division, this would result in uncontrolled cell division. This defect is one of the ways cancerous cells result from cell division. Uncontrolled growth is one of the main causes of tumors. These uncontrolled cells can spread across the body through the bloodstream which forms cancerous tumors in other regions of the body.
