Question
Please help!!!
(a) An electron in a hydrogen atom makes a transition from the n = 6 energy stage to the ground state (n=1). What is the frequency of the emitted photon?
I used the equation f=cR(1/nf-1/ni) and got the answer 3.19E15. It was the correct answer. I can't get the next questions right.
(b) Now the electron is excited from its ground state to its first excited state. What is the frequency of the absorbed photon?
I plugged in to the same equation as a... f=(3E8)*(1.097E7)*(1/6-1/1) and I am not getting the write answer. I have no idea what I am doing wrong and I have looked at examples!
(c) While in this first excited state, the electron receives 2.55 eV of energy. What is the quantum number n that describes the energy level that the electron ends up at? (Enter an integer!)
n= ?
Explanation / Answer
b) here, nf = 2 and ni = 1
f= cR(1/ni-1/nf)
f= (3*10^8)*(1.097*10^7)*(1/1 -1/2 )
= 1.646*10^15 Hz
c) Energy in 1st excited state, E2 = 13.6/2^2
= 3.4 eV
Energy in 2nd ecited state, E3 = 13.6/3^2
= 1.51 eV
Energy in 3rd ecited state, E4 = 13.6/4^2
= 0.85 eV
Energy in 4th excited state, E5 = 13.6/5^2
= 0.54 eV
clearly Energy received by elelctron , E = E1 - E4
E1-E4 = 3.4 - 0.85
= 1.55 eV
so, electron goes to 3rd excited state, n = 4 <<<<<<<-------------Answer
