After reading, please proceed to write the following paper:
1) How do Phoebe's failed attempts to disprove Joey's claim that "All people are selfish" relate Psychological Egoism? Will Phoebe ever be able to disprove Joey's claim? Why/ Why not? Please reply to this assignment in at least 200 words.Explanation / Answer
Joey feels that Phoebe on becoming a surrogate mother to her brother and his wife , is a feeling of selfishness. It is so because , it made Phoebe happy for herself. According to Joey there is no existence of unselfish good deeds .
She calls him to a Central park , and let a bee sting her . If Phoebe was selfish , then she would not have done this . She could have refrained herself from doing this . But Phoebe found that , this was the only way she could prove herself that she is not self centered . Sting of bees are hurtful in nature. Seeing this , Joey instantly shoots the bee down , as it was hurting her. But as , he shoots the bee down , it died then and there . Hence, Joey was not convinced with the fact that she was unselfish by nature.
Phoebe could not prove Joey's claim. She failed this time as well .
This time , Phoebe made another call to Joey stating that she had pledged $200 to PBS. Though it was a big amount for her , still she made an attempt in order to support the good deed. Whereas she had plans for buying a hamster for $200 , which she could have bought for $10.
But a turning point came at this moment. Since , Phoebe made a pledge to PBS , the station during that moment of time surpassed the amount which was pledged in the last year. It was Joey who pledged last year . Joey got the TV exposure which he was longing for quite a moment of time. Unknowing of the fact , Phoebe thought that it was due to her efforts that made Joey getting TV exposure. But that was not the case .
Pleding an amount of $200 to PBS was a huge amount for her. It was not making her feel good from within . But as soon , this incident took place , the act for which she was not feeling good , made her feel good later on. It was because , Phoebe was extremely delighted seeing Joey on TV.
This again proved Joey's claim that ' All deeds are selfish."
