Question

Consider a system consisting of two concentric solenoids, as illustrated in Figure 22-48. The current in the outer solenoid is I1 = 1.25 A, and the current in the inner solenoid is I2 = 2.17 A. The number of turns per centimeter is 95 for the outer solenoid and 41 for the inner solenoid.

(a) Find the magnitude and direction of the magnetic field between the solenoids.
________ mT

down, into the page , up, right, out of the page, left

(b) Find the magnitude and direction of magnetic field inside the inner solenoid.
mT

down, into the page , up, right, out of the page, left

Explanation / Answer

a)

Between the solenoid ,

the magnetic field is due to only outer solenoid,

B = u0*n*I1

B = 4pi*10^-7 * (95/.01) * 1.25

B = 0.0149 T = 14.9 mT

the magnitude of magnetic field is 14.9 mT

the direction is towards left.

b)

Now, inside both the solenoids ,

B = u0*n1*I1 - u0*n2*I2

B = 4pi*10^-7 *((95/.01)*1.25 - (41/.01)*2.17)

B = 3.74 *10^-3 T = 3.74 mT

the magnitude of magnetic field is 3.74 mT

direction of magnetic field is left.
