Question

Problem 6.2 A stone with a mass of 0.700kg is attached to one end of a string 0.800m long. The string will break if its tension exceeds 65.0N. The stone is whirled in a horizontal circle on a frictionless tabletop; the other end of the string remains fixed. Part A Find the maximum speed the stone can attain without breaking the string. Problem 6.33 An earth satellite moves in a circular orbit with an orbital speed of 5800m/s. Part A Find the time of one revolution of the satellite. Part B Find the radial acceleration of the satellite in its orbit.

Explanation / Answer

Problem 6.2

T = tension in the string = 65 N

m = mass of stone = 0.7 kg

r = length of the string = 0.8 m

the stone moves in a horizontal circle , hence centripetal force "Fc" acts on it which is provided by the tension force "T" in the string

hence T = Fc

T = mV2 /r

65 = (0.7) V2 /(0.8)

V = 8.62 m/s
