Question

Refer to the Figure above. The battery has a potential difference of 22 volts and the capacitances C1, C2, and C3 are 1.7 F, 2 F, and 6.3 F, respectively. (Please remember that the values of all the other capacitors, besides C1, C2, and C3 are same as given in the figure.)

What is the equivalent capacitance of all the capacitors and what is the charge stored on that equivalent capacitor?

1) 6.45 F; 59.8 C

2) 2.72 F; 59.8 C

3) 2.72 F; 141.83 C

4) 6.45 F; 103.4 C

5) 4.7 F; 141.83 C

C2 4.0 F 2.0 F C3 3.0 F C1

Explanation / Answer

first we will calculate equivalent capacitance

4uF ,6.3F and 2F are in series so

1/Ceq=1/4*10^-6+1/6.3+1/2

Ceq=3.99e^-6F

this in parlle with 2UF

so C=(3.99+2) uF

C=5.99uF

5.99uF,1.7 F and 3uF are in series so

so 1/Ceq=1/5.99*10^-6+1/1.7+1/3*10^-6

Ceq=2.72*10^-6 F

Q=CV

=2.72*22

Q=59.84uC

answer would be 2.
