Question

Refer to the Figure above. The battery has a potential difference of 22 volts and the capacitances C_1, C_2, and C_3 are 3.3 mu F, 2.4 mu F, and 7.2 ^F, respectively. (Please remember that the values of all the other capacitors, besides C1, C2, and C3 are same as given in the figure.) What is the equivalent capacitance of all the capacitors and what is the charge stored on that equivalent capacitor? a. 6.97 mu F: 138.6 mu C b. 3.31 mu F: 72.81 mu C c. 3.31 mu F: 153.37 mu C d. 6.3 mu F: 153.37 mu C e. 6.97 mu F: 72.81 mu C

Explanation / Answer

4uF and C3 are in series,

1/C' = 1/4 + 1/C3 = 1/4 + 1/7.2

C' = 2.57 uF

now C', C2 and 2uF are in parallel,

C" = 2.57 + 2.4 + 2 = 7 uF

3uF and C1 are also in parallel connection.

C"' = 3 + 3.3 = 6.3 uF

now C" and C"' are in series.

1/Ceq = 1/7 + 1/6.3

Ceq = 3.31 uF ....Ans

Q = Ceq V = 3.31 uF x 22 V = 72.8 uC ........Ans
