Explanation / Answer

Question 4.

a) Latent period or the incubation period is the time during which the pathogen (disease causing microbe) enters the host and multiplies in number to have enough number to cause illnes, however no symptoms are seen during this period.
Prodromal period is the period just after the incubation period. During this time, the microbe still continues to divide however, the number is enough to trigger the immune system. This period is marked by activation of immune system and general minor symptoms which are not enough to indicate the specific disease.

b) Complication is the unfavourable health condition that is caused by a disease and sequela is the pathological condition that is caused after the disease.
Considering the example of diabetes and kidney failure, we can say that if diabetes is a complication, the nprolonged complication will result in kidney failure i.e. the sequela.

c) etiology is the cause of the disease and pathogenesis is the manner in which the disease develops.
For eg., UV radiations may be the cause of cancer (etiology) but the effect of UV rays in causing the mutation and further development of the disease will be the pathogenesis of cancer.

d) the term idiopathic is used to refer to a disease that occurs spontaneously or whose cause is unknown.
iatrogenic refers to an illness that is caused as a result of certain treatment.
For eg.: a lot of drugs used to treat a particular disease have side effects and in turn cause other diseases.

nosocomial disease is a disease that originates from hospital. Can be generally related to various kinds of pathogenic infection (generally communicable)
