Question

Consider two point charges: one placed at (4.0 cm, 0.0 cm) with a charge of 20 nC, the second placed at (0.0 m, 2.0 m) with a charge of 10 nC. Assuming that the positive x-direction points right, and the positive y-direction points up,

a) What direction does the net electric field due to the two charges point, at the coordinate (0.0 cm, 0.0 cm)? Circle all that apply: a. up b. down c. right d. left

b) What direction does the net electric field due to the two charged point at the point (4.0 cm, 4.0 cm)? Circle all that apply: a. up b. down c. right d. left

Explanation / Answer

q1 = 20nC @ x = 4 cm = 4* 10^-2 m
q2 = 10nC @ y = -2 m

Both the charges are +ve , E.F due to +ve charges acts in a way pointing away from the charge.

a)
ElectricField @ 0,0 due to q1 will be towards left.
ElectricField @ 0,0 due to q2 will be upwards..

Net ElectricField @ 0,0 will be - (a) up and (d) left

(b)

ElectricField @ 4,4 due to q1 will be upwards.
ElectricField @ 0,0 due to q2 will point at some angle North of East , which will have components in upward and right direction.

Net ElectricField @ 4,4 will point -   (a) up and (c) right.
