Chapters 3 and 4- Critical Thinking and Discussion Questions
Answer the following questions for Chapter 3:
1.Compare and contrast the history of bacteria and the history of the human species.
2. What are some factors that might cause microclimates to develop within larger ecosystems?
Answer the following questions for Chapter 4:
3. Some people assert that human population growth is the sole environmental problem affecting the planet. Do you agree? Why or why not?
4. Do you think that buying greener products has a net positive effect on limiting climate change, reducing pollution, preserving biodiversity, and so forth? Or do you think that buying biodegradable, nontoxic, and recyclable products simply spurs more consumption?
6. What are your thoughts on Consumerism?
Explanation / Answer
1)Humans and bacterial species have great similarities between them.It is found that the proteome that is protein pool is similar in humans and chronic infections causing bacteria.Since humans act as a host for bacteria so both evolved together.Hence pathogenic bacteria that were dependent on humans as host showed more similarity with proteome of humans than non pathogenic bacteria.
2)Microclimates might be formed in a particular ecosystem because of variation in heat and water recieved in a area.Difference in topography and soil might also cause formation of microclimates.Lastly difference in vegetation distribution or changes in an area due to artificial causes for example lets say a mining site might also cause formation of a microclimate.
3)No,I feel that increasing human population is not the sole reason. We can still survive with increasing populating. The only yhing that is required is switching to healthier, safer ways of using reasouces and using them wisely.Like avoiding personal cars and using public transport, switching to biodegradable bags etc.
4)I feel that using greener products has a positive effect on environment by decreasing pollution, decreasing waste, increasing net fertility of soil and allowing longer usage of soil without side effects as in case of natural fertiLizers. Also using greener recyclable things decreases net consumption rather than spurring it.
6)I feel that consumerism is good.It protects the rights of people to buy whatever they wish to buy.But i feel that people should be using this right wisely.Unecessary collecting of goods and wasting them is not a good choice.Rather people should wisely decide what they need and should switch to more greener and healthier products for our planet.
