Question

I need some serious help with these two. Already asked them before but received incorrect answers.

The current through the 4.0-k? resistor in (Figure 1) is3.10 mA .

a)What is the terminal voltage Vba of the "unknown" battery? (The current is to the right.)

b)What is the terminal voltage Vba of the "unknown" battery? (The current is to the left.)

25)

In the circuit in the figure, (Figure 1) a 20-ohm resistor sits inside 115 g of pure water that is surrounded by insulating Styrofoam. In the circuit in the figure, (Figure 1) a 20-ohm resistor sits inside 115 g of pure water that is surrounded by insulating Styrofoam.

Explanation / Answer

a) voltage across 4kOhm = 3.1*4 = 12.4 V

Current throgh 8kohm = 12.4/8 = 1.55mA

Total current = 3.1+1.55 = 4.65 mA

Let voltage at a be 0V,

Voltage at b = 0 + 4.65*0.001 +12 +12.4 +5*4.65

= 47.65 V

Hence terminal voltage Vba =47.65 V

b) in this case the current of 4.65mA will flow towards left or counterclockwise

Voltage at b = 0 - 4.65*0.001 +12 -12.4 -5*4.65

= -23.65 V

Hence terminal voltage Vba = 23.65 V
