Question

In the figure below the two blocks are connected by a string of negligible mass passing over a frictionless pulley. m1 = 10.0 kg and m2 = 3.30 kg and the angle of the incline is ? = 43.0°. Assume that the incline is smooth. (Assume the +x direction is down the incline of the plane.)

(a) With what acceleration does the mass m2 move on the incline surface? Indicate the direction with the sign of your answer.

(b) What is the tension in the string? N

(c) For what value of m1 will the system be in equilibrium? kg

m2

Explanation / Answer

a)    Here, 10 *9.8 - T = 10 * a

        Also,    T - 3.3 * 9.8 * sin43 = 3.3 *a

=>      75.944 = 13.3*a

=>      a =   - 5.71 m/sec2              ( Direction up the incline plane)

b)    tension in the string =    40.9 N     (By Putting value of a in above equations)

c)   For equilibrium

     T = m1 g

and ,    T = 3.3 * 9.8 * sin43

=>   m1g = 3.3 * 9.8 * sin43

=>      m1 =   2.25 kg                 ---------------> value of m1 the system be in equilibrium
