Question
Consider an electric circuit with several resistors as shown in the figure below. The terminals A and B are connected to a 9.0-V battery. Find the equivalent resistance between point A and point B Find the current flowing through each resistor Is the potential difference across the 6.3-A Omega resistor greater than, less than, or the same as the potential difference across the 1.5-Omega resistor? Explain with a few sentences. Consider the circuit as shown in the figure below. Find the current through each resistor using (a) the rules for resistors in series and in parallel and (b) Kirchhoff's rules. A circuit consists of a 145 Omega resistor and a 335 Omega resistor which are in parallel, and a 182 Mu F capacitor which is in series with this combination of resistors, a switch, and a 5.0-V battery Initially, the capacitor is uncharged and the switch is open. At time t = 0s the switch is closed. Draw the electric circuit as it is described above. What charge will the capacitor have a long time after the switch is closed? At what time will the charge of the capacitor be 75.0 % of the value found in part (b)?Explanation / Answer
(a)
4.8, 3.3 & 8.1 are in parallel connection. = 1/(1/4.8 + 1/3.3 + 1/8.1) = 1.575
This is in Series with 6.3 , = 6.3 + 1.575 = 7.857
This is in parallel with 1.5 & 2.5 ,
Req = 1/(1/1.5+1/2.5 +1/7.857)
Req = 0.837 ohm
(b)
V = I*Req
I = 9.0/0.837
I = 10.75 A
I1 + I2 + I3 = 10.75 A --------1
1.5 * I1 = 2.5 * I2 = I3*7.857 -------2
I1 = 6.0 A
I2 = 3.6 A
I3 = 1.15 A
Now,
9.0 - 7.245 = 1.755
I4 = 1.755/4.8 = 0.365 A
I5 = 1.755/3.3 = 0.532 A
I6 = 1.755/8.1 = 0.217 A
Current in 1.5 ohm , I1 = 6.0 A
Current in 2.5 ohm , I2 = 3.6 A
Current in 4.8 ohm , I4 = 0.365 A
Current in 3.3 ohm , I5 = 0.532 A
Current in 8.1 ohm , I6 = 0.217 A
Current in 6.3 ohm , I1 = 1.15 A
(C)
Potential Difference across 1.5 ohm, = I1*1.5 = 6.0 * 1.5 = 9.0 V
Potential Difference across 6.3 ohm, = I3*6.3 = 1.15 * 6.3 = 7.245 V
So We can clearly make out,
Potential Difference across 6.3 ohm < Potential Difference across 1.5 ohm
