Problem 4.142

Replace the distributed loading by an equivalent resultant force. Suppose that w1 = 3 kN/m andw2 = 6 kN/m . (Figure 1)

Part A

Determine the equivalent resultant force.

Fr=

Express your answer to three significant figures and include the appropriate units. Enter positive value if the force is upward and negative value if the force is downward.

Part B,

Specify the location of the force on the beam, measured from the pin at A.

d=

Express your answer to three significant figures and include the appropriate units.

1 3 m

Explanation / Answer

Force due to w2 = 1/2 × (w1+w2) × 3 = 13.5 KN at 4.33 m from A

Force due to w1 = 3 KN at 1.5 m from A

Hence resultant force = 16.5 KN

Location of resultant force = (3*1.5 + 13.5*4.33)/16.5 = 3.8 m
