Question

Please Help. Can you solve this showing step by step solution with some details.

After a capacitor had been fully charged the switch, s in the diagram is flipped from position a to position b ( let's call this time, t = 0.0 sec) to start discharging the capacitor C = 20 mu F. Determine Q_0, the charge on the capacitor when it is fully charged. Determine the value of R, if at t = 1.5sec, the charge on the capacitor is measured to be equal to Q_0/2. Determine the maximum current that flows through R.

Explanation / Answer

Here,

inital potential across capacitor , Vo = 500 V

C = 20 uF

a) charge on the capacitor when it fully charged = C * V

charge on the capacitor when it fully charged = 20 *10^-6 * 500

charge on the capacitor when it fully charged = 0.01 C

the charge on the capacitor when it fully charged is 0.01 C

b)

as Q = Qo *e^(-t/(R*C))

for t = 1.5 s , Q = Qo/2

Qo/2 = Qo *e^(-1.5/(R*20 *10^-6))

solving for R

R = 1.082 *10^5 Ohm

the resistance R is 1.082*10^5 Ohm

c)

maximum current through resistance = Vo/R

maximum current through resistance = 500/(1.082 *10^5)

maximum current through resistance = 4.62 * 10^-3 A

the maximum current through resistance is 4.62 * 10^-3 A
