Question

Consider the following scenario and answer the related questions qualitatively.

You are holding a bowling ball at your chest, then toss the ball straight up in the air and catch it as it falls back down.

Describe how you would go about solving for work, impulse, and energy.

----------

If it helps to explain with actual numbers that's fine too, I can work backwards from that to find the general answer that's required.

Assume bowling ball has mass of 5kg, and leaves with initial velocity 3m/s upward or something.

Explanation / Answer

workdone by you while throwing the ball upward, Workdone = change in kinetic energy of the ball

= 0.5*m*v^2 - 0

= 0.5*5*3^2

= 22.5 J

potentail energy at the maximum height = 22.5 J

while the falls down to its initial height, the ball will have same speed but downward direction.

impulse on the ball by hand = m*(v2 - v1)

= 5*(0 - (-3))

= 15 N.s or kg.m/s

workdone by hand on the ball in catching = change in kinetic energy of the ball

= 0.5*m*(v2^2 - v1^2)

= 0.5*5*(0 - 3^2)

= -22.5 J
