Question

Please do #3 of analysis, and guestion #1, 2

This is an experiment of RC circuit.

Analysis (8 pts): 1) Plot on a single graph, the voltage as a function of time for C, and C2. According to equation (2), you should fit an exponential trendline through your data points. From your fit, you can obtain the time constants T, and ty. What are the values of the time constants for C and C? 2) Repeat the above for the series and parallel combinations of C and C2. 3) From the time constants obtained above, calculate the values of the capacitances of CI, C2, their series combination, and their parallel combination. Questions (4 pts): 1) From your values of C, and Cz determined from your plots, calculate the capacitances of the series and parallel combinations of these two capacitors according to equations (3) and (4) of your lab manual. 2) For the series and parallel combinations, compare the calculated values obtained in question (1) above with the values you obtained in analysis part (3). State the percentage differences between the calculated and analysis values.

Explanation / Answer

As,

T = RC

Given,

Time constants,

T1= 0.04 s, T2 = 0.024 s, T1(Series)= 0.016 s, T2(Parallel) = 0.04 s,

R = 5 M

C1 = T1/R

= 0.04/ (5 *106 )= 0.008 *10-6 farad

C2 = T2/R

= 0.024/ (5 *106 )= 0.0048 *10-6 farad

For series combination,

CS = C1C2 /C1 +C2

=(0.008 *10-6)( 0.0048 *10-6)/ (0.008 *10-6)+( 0.0048 *10-6)

=0.0000348*10-12/0.0128 *10-6

= 0.0027 *10-6 farad

For parallel combination,

CP = C1 +C2

=(0.008 *10-6)+( 0.0048 *10-6

= 0.0128 *10-6 farad

To solve other two examples, extra information is needed.

i.e. The values of C1 and C2 are not given in example.(equation 3 and equation 4 are not given)
