Question
An object is solid throughout. When the object is completely submerged in ethyl alcohol, its apparent weight is 15.2 N. When completely submerged in water, its apparent weight is 12.5 N. What is the volume of the object?(The density of ethyl alcohol is 806 kg/m³, answer in m3)
Numerical answers must be typed to the most accurate value.
Numerical answers within 3% of the actual answer are counted as correct.
To avoid rounding errors in calculations, use at least three (3) significant figures for numerical answers.
Explanation / Answer
When an object is immersed in a liquid ,buyont forces acts on it upward.So the net weight measured will be the difference between original weight and buyont force.
buyont force = V*d*g,where V is volume of solid and d is density of liquid,g = 9.81 m/s^2.let W be the weight of solid then
For case of immersing in water
12.5 = W - V*1000*g (1)
for case of immersing in ethyl alcohol with density 806 kg/m^3
15.2 = W - V*806*g (2)
subtracting (1) from (2) gives
2.7 = V*g*(1000-806)
2.7 = V*9.81*194
solving for V gives
V = volume of solid = 1.4187 x 10^-3 m^3
