As part of an interview for a summer job with the Coast Guard, you are asked to help determine the search area for two sunken ships by calculating their velocity just after they collided. According to the last radio transmission from the 50,000-ton cruise ship, the Hangover, it was going due west at a speed of 20 knots in calm seas through the tog just before it was struck broadside by the 70,000-ton ore freighter, the Ironhorse, which was traveling north at 10 knots. The transmission also noted that when the freighter's bow pierced the hull of the liner, the two ships stuck together and sank together. Your answer must be organized, clear, and include the elements the problem solving path: Focus the Problem Describe the Physics Plan the Solution Execute and Evaluate

Explanation / Answer

m1 = 50000 ton   u1 = -20i knots

m2 = 70,000 ton     u2 = 10j knots

initial momentum Pi = (m1*u1)+(m2*u2)

after collision the two struck each other

final momentum = Pf = (m1+m2)*V

from momentum conservation

Pf =Pi

V = -(50000*20)/(50000+70000)i + (70000*10)/(50000+70000) j

V = -8.33 i + 5.833 j

speed = v =sqrt(8.33^2+5.833^2) = 10.17 knots

direction = tan^-1(5.833/8.33) =35 degrees north of west
