Question
I just need help identifying what types of graphs I need to use AND what variables I need to use for a) 1-4 that way I am graphing the correct variables together using the correct graph type.
Here are the instructions:
My teacher sent me an excel spreedsheat, here are the variables that way you don't have to look at all of it.
Just let me know what I need to graph for example: a) 1- needs to be a scatter plot comparing Temperature (15 or 23 degree C) on the x axis and mass_5th (mass (mg) at the 5th star) on the y-axis.
Something like that. Thank you!
2. How will butterflies respond to climate change? As the global climate changes around the world, many locations are experiencing increases in temperature. Different groups of organisms are responding to a warming climate in various ways, like shifting their range north in latitude, flowering and breeding earlier, and changing interactions with other species in the community. Insects (like butterflies) that rely on the environmental temperature to regulate their internal processes may experience improved survival, reduced developmental growth periods, and increased activity as temperatures rise. Butterfly larvae (caterpillars) are likely strongly influenced by the changing climate. The researchers in this study wanted to test the hypothesis that an increase in ambient temperature would improve performance of caterpillars of the comma butterfly (Polygonia c-alum), which is a food generalist. These butterflies use three different host plants to lay their eggs and the researchers tested performance of the caterpillars on each of these plants. Researchers captured female butterflies and allowed them to lay eggs, which were then transferred to one of three food plants (U. dioica, B. pubescens, or S. caprea). Individual plants were then randomly selected to be housed in a temperature controlled environment, either 15 °C or 23 °C. Caterpillars used the host plants for food and grew at the different temperatures until they emerged as adults. Researchers measured several performance variables on the caterpillars including mass at the fifth instar and mass at the pupa stage (and the change between the two masses), the number of days between the two larval stages (development time), and if they survived until the pupa stage. The data from this laboratory experiment are located in an Excel spreadsheet (AW1 Fal12018_Data.xlsx). Review the variable information in the spreadsheet before addressing the questions Create the following four figures and attach them to the end of the assignment. Figures should follow the principles of making effective figures 1. Figure 1 should compare the frequency distribution of development time (days) for the caterpillars in the two a) 2. 3. 4. temperature treatments. (4pts) Figure 2 should compare survival of the caterpillars between the two temperature treatments. (4 pts) Figure 3 should help you to determine if the change in mass (mg) differs among the three host plants. (4 pts) Figure 4 should help you to determine if the change in mass (mg) differs between the two temperature treatments. (4 pts)Explanation / Answer
well the best fit for all the four seems to be a bar graph rather than a scatter plot. Because in each case we have more than one variable involved e.g in a) frequency will go on y-axix and the two temperatures on x-axis likewise b) survival will go on y axis and the two temperatures on x-axis for c) change of mass will be on y axis and three host plants on x-axis and d) mass on y- axis and two temperatures on x-axis
u can try a scatter too but i think bar will be more effective
