Question
Image that two charged rods are held together as shown and charged pith ball is placed at point P. C. Imagine that two charged rods are held together as shown and a charged pith ball is placed at point P Predict whether the rod farther from point P would exert an electric force on the pith ball. 1 point Top view Explain. 1 point Check your prediction by placing a charged pith ball at point P near two charged rods and then slowy moving one rod away from the other, Describe your observations and discuss with your partners whether your results from this experiment support your prediction. 1 pointExplanation / Answer
Solution:
a) The pith ball will be attracted to the charged rod ; When there are two charged rods, the charged rods will have their charges polarized and so the pith ball will still get attracted to the rod. The charge from the charged rods gets transferredto the pith ball. The charge on the pith ball will be opposite to the nearest rod and same as that of the far rod. The principle behind the attraction / repulsion is induction.
b) When the rods are placed near the charged pith ball, the ball will be attracted towards the rod of opposite charge. If the oppositel charged rod is closer , the attraction will be stronger. When the rods are moved away from each other , the rod which is moved closer to the charge dppith ball will have a stronger influence.
