Question

Consider two long, straight parallel wires, each carrying a current I. If the currents are flowing in same directions: please draw the directions of magnetic field for the two wires on the figure below; will the wires repel each other or attract each other? (Consider the direction of the magnetic force, from the magnetic field of one wire, on the other wire.) the two wires will attract each other, the two wires will repel each other, the two wires will exert a torque on each other, neither wire will exert a force on the other.

Explanation / Answer

28.

lets take both wire parallel to x axis and current is flowing in the +ve x direction.

now lets find magnetic field due to lower wire at the position of upper wire.

keeping thumb in cuurent direction and curling fingers about wire we get that magnetic
field will be z direction on upper wire.

For upper wire.

B = along k

IL = along +ve x direction (i )

and magnetic force on upper wire, Fb =IL X B

        = i x k = -j

that means force is in - y axis. (Or towards lower wire)

similarly force on lower willbe towards upper wire.

hence attractive force.
