16. Look at South America on the plate map or a globe. What is the major difference in topography/features between the area off the coast of western South America versus the coast off of eastern South America?

17. Which continental margin of South Amercia is a subduction zone?

A. East coast

B. West coast

18. Passive margins occur where continental crust and oceanic crust have coupled together and move as one plate. Which south American continental margin is passive and not a plate boundary?

A. East

B. West

19. The net movement of the Nazca Plate is to the East. What do you think the eventual fate of the Nazca Plate will be?

It will rise up and become a volcanic island

It will be completely subducted beneath the continent

It will continue to rise upward until it is pushed on top of a mountain

There will start to be melting in the center and it will become a divergent boundary

20.

Find the lowest spot in Africa (hint it is in the norteastern part of the continent)

White Nile -517

Quattara Depression -436

Lake Assal -512

Nubian Desert -436

A.

It will rise up and become a volcanic island

B.

It will be completely subducted beneath the continent

C.

It will continue to rise upward until it is pushed on top of a mountain

D.

There will start to be melting in the center and it will become a divergent boundary

Explanation / Answer

1. B - divergent

The western edge of the Nazca plate is bounded by the East pacfic rise which is a divergent plate margin.

2. A - Convergent

There is a continuing subduction at the eastern boundary of the Nazca plate. This is why the Andis mountains and the Peru-Chile trench occurs at this area.

3. D - Mariana Trench

The mariana trench which is located in the western Pacific ocean is the the deepest known point of the world's ocean floors.

4. C - Ocean ocean convergent.

The mariana trench is located in the subduction zone where the Pacific plate gets subducted under the Mariana plate. Both are oceanic plates.

5. D - Ocean ocean convergence

The islands of Japan are formed due to the volcanism generated by the ocean-ocean subduction.

6. D - Ocean ocean convergence

Aleutian islands also formed in a similar way as that of Japan.

7. D - Divergent boundary

Red sea is formed by the movement along the red sea rift which is a divergent boundary.

8. A - Continent continent convergence

The whole Himalayas are a result of the continent continent collission between the Indian and Eurasian plates.

9. A - Continent continent convergence

Appalachian mountains formed as a result of continent-contnent collission which created the former super continent Pangea.

10. D - Divergent boundary

From the name itself it is clear that it a rift valley which is a divergent boundary.

11. D - Divergent boundary

Atlantic ocean is formed by the seafloor spreading along the mid-atlantic ridge which is a divergent boundary.

12. E - Transform boundary

San Andreas fault is a classic example of transform plate boundary.

13. E - hotspot

Hawaiian islands are formed as a result of the Northwest movement of the Pacific plate above a mantle hotspot.

14. C - Divergent boundary and hotspot

Iceland is formed due to the volcanic activity of both iceland hotspot and the mid-atlantic ridge divergent boundary.

15. A - Mid-atlantic ridge

The other three are features of Pacific ocean

16. On the western coast of South america there is the Andes mountains which formed due to the subduction of Nazca plate through the Peru-Chile trench. This is absent in the Eastern coast. On the Eastern Coast we can see regular continental shelf, slope and abysal plains.

17. B - West coast

The Nazca plate gets subducted under the South american plate.

18. A- East

The East side of South america is passive

19. B - it will be completely subducted beneath the continent

20. C - Lake Assal

It is the lowest point on land in Africa and the third lowest point on land in the world.
