Three point charges are located at the corners of an equilateral triangle as in the figure below. Find the magnitude and direction of the net electric force on the 1.70 C charge. (Let A = 1.70 C, B = 7.10 C, and C = 4.48 C.)

magnitude     N direction     ° below the +x-axis 60.00 0.500 m.

Explanation / Answer

From the given data,
FAB = k*qA*qB/L^2

= 9*10^9*1.7*10^-6*7.1*10^-6/0.5^2

= 0.4345 N (60 degrees below -x axis)

FAC = k*qA*qC/L^2

= 9*10^9*1.7*10^-6*4.48*10^-6/0.5^2

= 0.2742 N (towards +x axis)

x-component of net force,
Fx = FABx + FACx

= -0.4345*cos(60) + 0.2742

= 0.057 N

y-component of net force,
Fy = FABy + FACy

= -0.4345*sin(60) + 0

= -0.376 N

Net force, F = sqrt(Fx^2 + Fy^2)

= sqrt(0.057^2 + 0.376^2)

= 0.380 N <<<<<<<<<<----------------------ANswer

direction :

theta = tan^-1(Fy/Fx)

= tan^-1(0.376/0.057)

= 81.4 degrees below +x axis <<<<<<<<<<----------------------ANswer
