Question
Please help answer questions below. Sorry for multiple questions but the are all sequential and I dont know how to solve. Thank you.
1.) Imagine a ball sitting on the side of a mountain. How would the ball move so that its gravitational potential energy did not change?
Please sketch a picture. A line in this direction is called equalpotential.
2.) Which direction is the net force on the ball?___________
An arrow in this direction is called the gravitational field. Do this for several points on the mountain. Connecting arrows that point into one another you can create gravitational field lines.
3.) Looking down on the mountain from above, what would the equalpotential lines look like?
4.) Looking from above, what would the gravitational field lines look like?
Explanation / Answer
PART 1)
Ball have to move on same horizontal level so that its height will not change
then it potential energy will remain same
PART 2)
Gravitational force will be along the centre of earth so it is always vertically downwards
PART 3)
Looking downwards the potential lines are parallel lines and the potential is decreasing as we go down
PART 4)
Looking upwards the potential lines are parallel lines and the potential is increasing as we go up
