Question

On aircraft carriers, catapults are used to accelerate jet aircraft to flight speeds in a short distance. One such catapult takes a 18,100-kg jet from 0 to 69 m/s in 2.9 s. (Assume the catapult acts in the positive horizontal direction. Indicate the direction with the sign of your answer where appropriate.)

(a) What is the acceleration of the jet in m/s2?
1

(b) What is the acceleration of the jet in g's?
2

(c) How far does the jet travel while it is accelerating?
3

(d) How large is the force that the catapult must exert on the jet?
4

Explanation / Answer

here,

mass , m = 18100 kg

t = 2.9 s

final speed , v = 69 m/s

a)

let the accelration be a

v = u + a * t

69 = 0 + a * 2.9

a = 23.8 m/s^2

b)

the accelration ,a = 23.8 /9.8 * g

a = 2.43 *g

c)

the distance travelled , s = v^2 /2a

s = 69^2 /(2*23.8)

s = 100 m

d)

the force that the catapult must exert on the jet , F = m * a

F = 18100 * 23.8 = 4.31 * 10^5 N
