Question
I have tried this problem multiple times and I keep getting the same answers which are wrong. Can someone please help?
The picture is ak little blurry so here is the question:
A pressure versus volume (pV) diagram is shown in the figure below for a system. The arrows of the curve indicate the direction of the process and the points of interest are labelled. Calculate the amount of work done on the system from 0 - 2 and then for the entire curve 0 - 5 . The values for the points in the diagram are:
Volume (m^3) Pressure (Pa) V0=26.2 p0=1.37e4 V1=19.3 p1=1.37e4 V2=16.6 p2=5.76e3 V3=13.3 p3=5.76e3 V4=13.3 p4=3.06e3 V5=8.02 p5=1.00e3 ressure versus volume (p) diagram is shown in the figure below for a system. we know when work is done by the gas, W is positive
when work is done on gas W is negative.
In the given case work is done on the gas. so, W is negative.
we also know, Workdone = area under P-V curve
Wo2 = -( (Vo - V1)*Po + (V1 - V2)*P2 + (1/2)*(V1-V2)*(P2-P1) )
= -( (26.2 - 19.3)*1.37*10^4 + (19.3 - 16.6)*5.76*10^3 + (1/2)*(19.3 - 16.6)*(1.37-0.576)*10^4 )
= -120801 J
Wo5 = Wo2 + W25
= -120801 -( (V2-V3)*P2 + (V4-V5)*P5 + (1/2)*(V4-V5)*(P5-P4) )
= -120801 - ( (16.6 - 13.3)*5.76*10^3 + (13.3 - 8.02)*1*10^3 + (1/2)*(13.3 - 8.02)*(3.06 - 1)*10^3 )
= -150527 J
