Question

In the engine in your car, air at atmospheric pressure and a temperature of 20 degree C is confined in the cylinder of volume 2.5 times 10^-4 m^3. After compression by a piston the air is reduced to 1/9 its original volume. You decide to use your knowledge of the ideal gas law to calculate the temperature of the compressed air, assuming the pressure reaches 40 atm. d. Which of the following phrases best describes the term heat. Please explain your answer. i. heat means the same as temperature ii. heat means energy in transit due to a temperature change iii. heat means the internal energy of a substance iv. heat is unrelated to energy

Explanation / Answer

1) As per ideal gas law

P1V1/ T1= P2V2/T2

as the figure is not very claer, I have made conclusion that new volume = 1/8 of old volume

(1 atm) ( 2.5 x 10^-4)/ 20 = ( 40 atm) ( 1/8 ) ( 2.5 x 10^-4)/ T2

T2= ( 20 ) ( 5) = 100 C

b) ii statment: heat implies energy in transit de to temp change
