1. A toy train has a non-zero velocity vo at the top of a h The train travels down the hill, then along a flat horizontal surface until it collides with an elastic bumper that brings the train to a stop. Assume the hill and flat surface are frictionless and neglect air resistance. a. Draw a system schema and choose an appropriate system for this scenario b. Are there any external forces that do work on the system? If so, which ones? c. Are there any internal forces which have an associated potential energy? If so, which ones? d. Are there any internal forces that do not have an associated potential energy? If so, which ones? Do these forces do any work?Explanation / Answer
a) Let us choose the toy train + earth to be the system. The figure would be same as the one given in the question. Just denote the train and earth as pert of the system.

b) The agents external to the system are the hill, flat surface and the elastic bumper.
Forces due to the hill on system compnent:
Toy train:- while the toy train is on the hill part, it exerts normal force on the toy train. This force is perpendicular to the motion of the train. So work done by the force due to hill on the toy is zero.
The hill is frictionless, so it exerts no frictional force on the toy.
The hill can also exert gravitational force of attraction on the toy, but it is negligible. So work done is also negligible.
Earth: The hill exerts gravitational force of attraction on the earth just as the earth does on it and and normal force (on the surface in contact with earth), but since there is zero displacement of earh due to these forces, the work done is zero.
Forces due to the flat surface on system compnent:
Toy train:- while the toy train is on the flat surface, it exerts normal force on the toy train. This force is perpendicular to the motion of the train. So work done by the force due to flat surface on the toy is zero.
The flat surface is frictionless, so it exerts no frictional force on the toy.
The flat surface can also exert gravitational force of attraction on the toy, but it is negligible. So work done is also negligible.
Earth: The flat surface exerts gravitational force of attraction and normal force (on the surface in contact with earth) on the earth just as the earth does on it, but since there is zero displacement of earth due to these forces, the work done is zero.
Forces due to the elastic bumper on system compnent:
Toy train:- When the toy train collides with the bumper the toy has Kinetic energy which becomes zero after collision with the bumper. So, the bumper does work on the toy train.
Earth: The bumper exerts gravitational force of attraction and normal force (on the surface in contact with earth) on the earth just as the earth does on it, but since there is zero displacement of earth due to these forces, the work done is zero.

c) The internal force in the system is the gravitational force between the toy and earth. This force has an associated potential energy mgh, where h is the spearation of the toy from earth's surface.
***************************************************************************************************
d) No.
Because, for the system chosen only internal force is the gravitaional force between the toy and earth and it does have potential energy associated with it.
