Question

Answer 4-6 and show all work please. Two cars have a 'rear end' collision. A 1200 kg Honda moving at 20 m/s strikes a 1000 kg Ford moving at 15 m/s. Their bumpers become locked and they continue to move as one mass. What is their final velocity? 4. Two football players have a head-on collision and grab onto each other's uniforms. The 80 kg Pennridge Ram was moving at 3 m/s, while the 70 kg Souderton player was moving in the opposite direction at 2.5 m/s. What is their final velocity after impact? 5. Two barges full of salted toad guts have a collision. The red barge has a mass of 150 000 kg and is traveling Northwest at 0.25 m/s. The blue barge has a mass of 100 000 kg and is traveling Southeast at 0.1 m/s. After the colision the blue barge has a velocity of 0.32 m/s to the Northwest. What is the final velocity of the red barge? Is this collision elastic? 6.

Explanation / Answer

4)Given,

m1 = 1200 kg ; u1 = 20 m/s ;

m2 = 1000 kg ; u2 = 15 m/s

let v be the required velocity

We know from conservation of momentum

Pi = Pf

m1u1 + m2 u2 = (m1 + m2) v

v = (m1u1 + m2u2)/(m1 + m2)

v = (1200 x 20 + 1000 x 15)/(1200 + 1000) = 17.73 m/s

Hence, v = 17.73 m/s
