Question
Im really struggling to understand these concepts. Please post the steps i need to take to solve these types of problems. Thanks
A circuit is constructed with five resistors and a battery as shown. The values for the resistors are: R1 = R5 = 58 , R2 = 104 , R3 = 110 , and R4 = 62 . The battery voltage is V = 12 V.
What is Rab, the equivalent resistance between points a and b?
What is Rac, the equivalent resistance between points a and c?
What is I5, the current that flows through resistor R5?
What is I2, the current that flows through resistor R2?
What is I1, the current that flows through the resistor R1?
What is V4, the voltage across resistor R4?
Explanation / Answer
Here ,
for the resistance between a and b
Rab = (R2 + R3) || R4
Rab = (104 + 110) * 62/( 62 + 104 + 110)
Rab = 48.1 Ohm
resistance between a and b is 48.1 Ohm
-----------------------------------
for Rac
Rac = R1 + Rab
Rac = 48.1 + 58
Rac = 106.1 Ohm
the resistance between a and c is 106.1 ohm
-------------------------------
total resistance , Req = 106.1 + 58
Req = 164.1 Ohm
current in R5 = V/Req
current in R5 = 12/164.1
current in R5 = 0.073 A
------------------------
curernt in R2 = current in R5 * R4/(R4 + R2 + R3)
curernt in R2 = 0.073 * 62/( 62 + 104 + 110)
current in R2 = 0.0164 A
------------------------
current through R1 = current in R5
current through R1 = 0.073 A
---------------------------
for the voltage across R4
voltage across R4 = (0.0164) * (104 + 110)
voltage across R4 = 3.515 V
