Question
I would really appreciate it if someone could help me with this question.
Suppose that each of a person's hands makes contact with a different conductor over a surface area of 11.0 cm2. We measure the hand-to-hand resistance of the body by connecting the conductors to an ohmmeter that reads 1.10 104 when the hands are dry. We know that internal body resistance is only about 600 .
(c) Suppose the area of contact of each hand with a conductor is reduced to 1.09 cm2. Find the resistance between the hands.
Explanation / Answer
given that:
surface area of conductor A = 11.0 cm2
area of contact of each hand A2 = 1.09 cm2
resistance R = 1.10*104 ohms
resistance of body Rb = 600 ohms
R = Rb+2Rs ==> Rs = (R-Rb) / 2 = (11000-600) / 2 = 5200 ohms.
Rs2 /Rs = A / A2 ==> Rs2 = Rs*A /A2 = 5200*11.0 / 1.09 = 5.24*104 ohms
R2 = Rb+2Rs2 = 600+2*5.24*104 = 1.05*105 ohms
