Question

In the diagram below, in the region inside the circle, a magnetic field is directed into the paper. The magnitude of the magnetic field is increasing in time. a) When both of the switches are open, i) does current flow through any of the bulbs? Explain why current does or does not flow. ii) if current does flow, what is the direction of the current and which bulbs does it flow through? Explain how you know the direction of the current and show in a picture the path of the current through the circuit. If it does not flow, explain why not. iii) if current does flow, rank the brightness of the bulbs. Explain. b) When switch S_1 is open and switch S_2 is closed, i) does current flow through any of the bulbs? Explain why current does or does not flow. ii) If current does flow, what is the direction of the current and which bulbs does it flow through? Explain how you know the direction of the current and show in a picture the path of the current through the circuit. If it does not flow, explain why not. iii) if current does flow, rank the brightness of the bulbs. Explain. c) When switch S_2 is open and switch S_1 is closed, i) does current flow through any of the bulbs? Explanation / Answer

a)

i) Yes. Even though the swithes s1 and s2 are open, the square path (containing bulbs A and B) is complete. Hence current flows.

ii) The direction of the current is clockwise and it flows through A and B. We know the direction using right hand thumb rule.

iii) Same brightness for A and B (since equidistant from circle).

b)

i) Yes, because closed path is formed; this time including bulb C as well.

ii)clockwise; A,B&C; Right hand thumb rule.

iii) A=B > C.(since C is farther)

c)

i) Yes, forming closed path with A and B.

ii) clockwise; A,B; Right hand thumb rule.

iii) A=B (since equidistand from circle)
