What is the total energy of the 60.0 kg skater before she starts her ride, 12 meters above the ground?

----------------------------------------------

If you throw a 2.0 kg basketball straight up in the air, at what height will the basketball have 160 J of potential energy?

Explanation / Answer

a) before starting her ride 12 m above the ground

skater has only potential energy .

there is no kinetic energy

=> total energy = KE + PE = 0 + mgh = 60*9.8*12 = 7056 J

b) PE = mgh

=> 160 = 2 * 9.8* h

=> h = 8.163 m
