PHYSICS Examination 6-Continued Cork 32. As the illustration on the right shows, a thermos bottle consists of two glass containers with a vacuum in between. The surfaces facing the vacuum space are coated with a thin layer of silver. In the space below, explain how a thermos reduces the transfer of heat by conduction, convection and radiation. Inner wall (glass) Vacuum Hot or Cold Liquid Outer wall (glass) Silver film which is entirely within the boundaries of the United Stater nd the lareest hody of fresh water in the U.S.) is located in a relatively cold climat 33. Lake Michigan (the only Great Lake

Explanation / Answer

(a) We assume that Jan, 1 1900 was a typical day of winter with freezing temperatures outside. Water generally achieves its maximum density at roughly 4 C. So it means water in all its forms is less denser at higher temperatures. So before a warm lake starts to freeze, water at 4 C (celsius) will reach the bottom of the lake.

Temeprature at the bottom of the lake is 4 C

(b) So in the month of August the temperatures are surely not freezing so it will be surely different at the bottom of the lake. The temperature at the bottom would be depend on the day-time temperatures on that day.

(c) The water close in to the shore is generally shallower than in the middle of the lake. In order to cause ice to form all water in a given area must be cooled below 4C, since the area closer to the shore is shallower this means that the water can be cooled to that level faster than in the middle of the lake.

(d) The lake must absorb 80 calories for every gram of ice melted.

(e) Not untill all the ice is melted.
