Question

Tortoise and Hare w/ Solution A tortoise and hare start from rest and have a race. As the race begins, both accelerate forward. The hare accelerates uniformly at a rate of 1.5 m/s2 for 4 seconds. It then continues at a constant speed for 11.6 seconds, before getting tired and slowing down with constant acceleration coming to rest 92 meters from where it started. The tortoise accelerates uniformly for the entire distance, finally catching the hare just as the hare comes to a stop. 1) How fast is the hare going 3.2 seconds after it starts? See solution 4.8 /s Submit 2) How fast is the hare going 11 seconds after it starts? See solution 6 /s Submit 3) How far does the hare travel before it begins to slow down? See solution 81.6 m Submit

Explanation / Answer

4) v1 = 0 + (1.5 x 4) = 6 m/s

v22 - v12 = 2 x a x (92 - 81.6)

0 - 62 = 2 x a x 10.4

a = -36/(2 x 10.4) = -1.73 m/s2

5) let t is the time taken to slow down

v2 = v1 + a t

t = -v1/a = -6 /-1.73 = 3.47 s

total time = 4 + 11.6 + 3.47 = 19.07 s

6) s = 0.5 x a x t2

92 = 0.5 x a x 19.072

a = 2 x 92/19.072 = 0.505 m/s2
