Question
Mass of water is(m) = 8 million kg Height of Niagaa Falls(h) =50mThe water is dropping, so the change in heightis now negative. The change in potential energy is:
PE = mgh
= (8 x 106 kg)(9.8 m/s2)(-50 m)
= -3.92 x 109 J
can you explain the formula in this question for me. where does the 10^6 came from? Height of Niagaa Falls(h) =50m

Explanation / Answer
PE = is a maximum potential energy that the object have. Ithink you should write is just a PE without delta sign. m = mass. it's refer to the mass of object. in this case the objectis water. g = is the gravitational acceleration. if we aren't given the valueof its, we can write g = 10 m/s2 h = is the high of the object which are measured from theground. it is not always have negative sign because it's not avector. if your energy is JOULE so you must have the m in kilograms, g inm/s2 and h in meter then the 106 is come from 8 million kg it means8.000.000 kg. if we want to write the shorter way, we can writewith the exponential like above. 106 = 1.000.000. so 8 x106 = 8.000.000 same as 8 million kg. I hope it will help you. If you're not clear pleas send me amessage. thanks
