Question

Part II. Infiltration: How do alterations to basins & streams affect floods? (4 pts) A typical flood hydrograph is shown in the figure below. Courtesy of G. Hancock. It is from a town along a stream similar to the Susquehanna precipitation Crest Segment Recession or Falling Limb Lag Baseflovw Recession Storm flow Rising Limb Base flow Time (hours, days, or weeks) 4. Imagine that the town is contemplating building concrete parking lots in 10% of the drainage basin. Describe what will happen to the hydrograph in terms of precipitation, lag, and crest height at the town. Explain your answer. (4 points) (Use answer sheet) Part I1. Rivers- Answer in space provided in answer sheet (10 pts)

Explanation / Answer

Because of constuction of concrete parking in drainage basin by 10%, the shape of the hydrograph will be changed. Because of making the surface impervious infiltration decreases there by surface runoff will be increased. Due to that the peak of hydrograph (crest height of hydrogarph) will be higher than normal. The lag time is also decreased.
