Question
I need step by step solution of this problem. It is very important for me to understand each step so please solve with descriptive and clear writing. Thank you!
A dam and its reservoir built to provide irrigation water (IR), municipal water (MD), and water for hydropower production (HD) is sketched below Agricultural Zone Dam Reservoir Municipality Power Plant The inflow into the reservoir (SF), rainfall (R), and evaporation (E), and the water required for irrigation, municipal use, and hydropower production are all listed in the Table below in 10 m3/month. Water released for hydropower production is also used for downstream requirements (DR). Determine: a) the required storage capacity for the reservoir, b) the reservoir content at the end of August, and c) the monthly spills. MONTH SF ID MD HD DR 2,8 1,6 1,28 0,64 0,3 0,12 0,2 0,2 0,4 0,44 0,62 0,66 0,82 0,86 0,72 0,44 0,24 0,2 0,2 0,2 10 10 1 10 12 13 14 15 16 0,48 2,42 3,08 2,8 1,6 1,28 0,64 10 10 0,44Explanation / Answer
HERE CI = CUMULATIVE INPUT TO RESERVOIR (SF+RAINFALL)
AND CO= CUMULATIVE OUTPUT(E+ID+MD+max(HD,DR))
a) BALANCING STORAGE = A+B
HERE A = MAXIMUM WATER THAT CAN BE STORED = MAXIMUM POSITIVE VALUE OF STORAGE
B = MAXIMUM WATER THAT CAN BE DEPLETED AT ANY TIME IN A MONTH = MAXIMUM NEGATIVE VALUE OF STORAGE
SO, REQUIRED STORAGE CAPACITY = 7.88 + 7.86
=15.74 * 106 m3
b) RESERVOIR CONTENT AT THE END OF AUGUST
from the table we can see that the storage of reservoir in month 8 i.e. august
which is equal to -7.86 . here minus sign indicates that in this month there is net outflow of water from the reservoir that means the water level is receding in the month of august .
reservoir content = 15.74 - 7.86 =7.88 Mm3
explanation
here, in column 10 we have taken maximum value of HD,DR because the water which have been used in hydropower plant will be used downstream if HD>DR. but in case if DR>HD the water used by HD will not be enough for downstream requirement so we choose the maximum value between them.
here all the calculated value are in million m3 as per given question.
c) monthly spills can be calculated by the storege in every month, which we have already calculated in table.
